The White Stuff

Picture from Google
*Stands up*

Hello, my name is Sol and I am addicted to sugar.  As I type this I am on day two of trying to beat my addiction. I have a raging head ache, I am dying for a ginger nut biscuit and I feel altogether RANCID.

I have been painting and painting and glossing and then I lost my mind last night and got the chalk paint out that I have been trying to ignore as much as possible.  I have painted a pine bed frame that we had when we first set up house, it is rather yellow/orange and the room is Swedish White.  When I look at it, it has a touch of grey in it I think.  I was going to paint it white.  Posh Boy said no.  Too much white, leave it pine.  *Shudder*.

I had visions of the finished article looking something like {Gillian's makeover}.  I have too many runs and dribbles for it to be as good.  As I have said my craft skills are low.

In a fit of craziness or a brain f@rt moment, I deciced that last night at 7pm was the best time to do this.  Yep -completely lost it there.  As our new carpets are arriving at any moment, to be installed by the carpet fitters.  I have no clue what time, I will just wait in.  Passing the hall, trying really hard not to make a cup of tea and add 10 sugars and feel better.

I have used {Annie Sloan chalk paint in Paris Grey}.  I have gone through less than half a tin on a double bed, which I think is really good. I will let Posh Boy wax it.  Lol he will love that job.

Eric, bless him, is so desperate to be near you, that even though he hates the vacuum cleaner, he followed me all around the house.  Vacuum inhaling the last of the plaster bits I had bladed (I dont know if thats a word, its long handled scrapper thingy with a really sharp blade on the end...), off of the floor.  He was shuddering and shaking and then was promptly sick all over the place.  Marta gleefully running through it.  All of this at 6.30am.  urgh...

I feel kind of weird about this house now.  It is a really good house now, it will really be a good family home for who ever buys it.  It has nearly broken me, but at the same time we have really put a lot of ourselves into it and I am proud of it.

I dont know, rambling here a bit.  I am desperate for something sweet.  My friend said, not to even eat apples, until I am better.  Urgh.  Rough, I feel rough I tell you.  My throat is also sore from all the paint stink.

This sugar thing, is really going to limit my food.  I already drink hardly any alcohol, the wind must be blowing in the right direction, all the stars aligned and the moon blue.  I havent eaten meat for a few years now.  And I am dairy intollerant.  Apart from eating eggs I am practically vegan.  Now, no sugar?  I am only doing this until I get to a place where I dont only want to eat, biscuits or sweet things all day from the moment I wake up.  I live on white food and need to sort that out.  My food intake since we havent had a veggie garden is disgusting.  I can eat a whole tube of ginger nut biscuits and not think anything of it.  And then look for some sweets.  Maybe some jelly tots for dessert.  Did you know jelly tots are vegan?

I also have some of {this stuff}, which is liquid gold!  The hot chocolate I make with this is DIVINE.  Yum, I want it now.  hmmm. Made with coconut milk and a touch of almond milk.  Oh yes, with waffles.  *drools like Homer Simpson*.  It is vegan friendly and doesnt use palm oil.  Winner in my books.  Give it a try.

I need to go.  I am craving food real bad.  Another glass of water is needed I think.

Sol, Out.

Well, you've certainly discouraged me from giving up sugar. Sounds like it would be harder than when I kicked coke and heroin (Kidding! ME? Coke and heroin? Not happening. I'm still using.) I was going to suggest almond milk. I have some every morning for breakfast, so I'm glad to see that you use it. A cup of unsweetened vanilla almond milk, which is vegan and has no cholesterol, makes me think I'm having something sweet. Then I spend the rest of the day, guilt free, eating sugar.

Love,
Janie

Ha ha Janie! When we were able to get almon milk and coconut milk more readily in this country, it really opened up my world. Soya milk is ok, but I really like almond milk. It's really yummy!!! Hope you are well.

Just have the ginger nut. Ginger is good for you so surely counteracts any effect of the sugar. Then again I've convinced myself that carrot cake is one of my five a day. 😊 I am a big fan of sugar too but for now will just give in to my addiction. Will we get to see a picture of the bed? X

Hi Jules, my food intake is disgusting right now. I seem to be surviving on food made with sugar. Weidly, I have lost weight? uhh? If the bed is picture worthy sure you can have a picture! lol

I know exactly what you are talking about Sol! If we are all honest, we all love this sweet vegan food... but some of us takes it slightly bit more and that's exactly why I have sore throat ...but unlike you, I think my dentist caused this with all the tooth drilling dust that lands onto my throat.... not pleasant, so I'm also going for a nice cup of that vegan liquid gold you're talking about to compensate myself too:) Let's have a happy day:) - Please...just for this week only.

Aren't we humans something else. Most (if not all of us) are addicted to something or other which helps us function and get through our day...

I recently discovered decaffeinated cappuccino - I have HAD to ration myself to only one daily, but could easily have 6 or 7 cups of it...

Hey Annie, I am being told by Wednesday I will feel better? lol Roll on Wednesday. I am hoping for a good week. I know that this pain is worth it and sorting out my food intake will make he feel healthier and happier in the long run. Sorry about the dentist problem. Did they not have that water squity thing and vacuum hose going? urgh horrible. Get better soon. Have some hot chocolate.

Hi Dani, if I also gave up caffeine I think you would need to strap me down. I am living on black tea and rice crispies with almond milk... Does the decaf cappuccino come pre sweetened?

It's not so difficult to give up sugar and caffeine. I did this several years ago. There are good substitutes out there , but quite expensive. For example if the caffeine is extracted not chemically but with hot water - that's an expensive method and the price accordingly. Anyway, giving up sugar is a must as it could kill.

Hi DUTA, wow, did it take you a long time to get over the cravings? I feel sligtly better today. I am really thirsty. I am trying really hard to kick the sugar, as the foods that have the sugar also have the fat. And you are completely right, it could kill. I want to be around for a long time yet. Thanks for your comment, it has given me the push to keep going. It would have been easy to give in. :)

Although I've never had a craving for sugar (or chocolate, for that matter) I finally gave up putting sugar in coffee and tea about 40 years ago with no problem. Developing diabetes (type 2, mercifully) five years ago was therefore a bit of a shock, though a telling contributory reason for it must have been my liking for downing Lucozade energy drinks, as well as my age increasing the further likelihood of it happening. I'm wondering if your sugar addiction could land you in the same position rather earlier than might otherwise happen? Alternatively, you could just tell me to shut up and mind my own business!

The whisker or two that I'm also away from being outright vegan is my penchant for eggs too (I just LURVE 'em - done in any and every way), as well as the problems I sometimes find in obtaining vegetarian cheese. So, technically and accurately speaking, I suppose you and I are both lacto-vegetarians, at least until we cross the bridge.

Ah Sol, big, big hugs. We recently gave up sugar but not to the extreme you are, so I suppose we reduced it, which is what I see as acceptable for us. I would have fruit, seriously. You're risking crashing and burning in my opinion. I have honey in my tea instead of sugar as local honey is supposed o help reduce hay fever symptoms too, so I see it as a double bonus. Also, during the first few weeks I had 1 Ringtons ginger snap every night until I ran out and just had honey tea (only 2 cups a day for me with honey, rest without anything). Remember to sit back and smell the roses xx

Sol - It comes pre-sweetened or unsweetened ;)

Hi Ray, you are completely right about the diabetes, I have to sort myself out and I am trying. I wont make excuses I have just been really lax and cr@p with it all. It is even worse when your nutritionist friend says to you "you look like hell, you've lost weight and seem to be really strung out". Ive been burning the candle at both ends, long work days, then finishing the kitchen and painting etc. And then as she said "your ridiculous need to stick to unrealistic budgets is putting your health at risk". (Posh Boy goes to the office every morning and has a hot lunch there before coming home for the last 2 months because of the kitchen etc, I on the other hand nuke a potato and call it good, washed down with green tea and half a packet of ginger biscuits). I have started my food diary again. It keeps me accountable. Do Vitalife do a vegan cheese? If you look on Sue's blog she has featured it on there...

Hey Tracy, you know my pain! I am like a sulky teenager, I used to be sooooo good with food. Now, urgh, awful. Once I am back to 'normal' I will also try the honey thing! Thanks for the tip :)

Hey Dani, I think I will look into that for posh boy.

Sol - when i gave up coffee (after drinking 2 pots a day with a ton of sugar and 18% cream), it took about a week for the achiness and headache to stop. sugar i just replaced with honey and maple syrup. the one that near did me in was getting off dairy - me and jam were sick - and i mean sick - for 3 straight weeks. it's different for different people but yes you need to get off all that refined, sugary food. nothing you don't already know. one thing that could help is have to have carrot pieces and celery pieces already cut and ready and in the fridge. if you feel for sugar, go grab a few carrot and celery pieces and force yourself to eat them. after a week or two, your taste buds will really have changed.

looking forward to pictures of the house! and sending love! your friend,
kymber

Hi Kymber, dairy I dont have anyways. But this sugar gig is real hard. Everyone keeps telling me I should be over it by now, but at work I could smell the sugar in peoples tea. It makes me feel physically sick. I am going to try the carrot and celery. I read somewhere to put a cube of grapefruit in your mouth and you wont want anything. My brother used grapefruit juice to give up smoking, it does something to the tongue and everything tastes bad after or off. I think I need to try that. I will introduce some sweet foods back in, but I have been extreme. Laziness really, not bothering to cook. I am awful and I know it. My sister said blog about it and then you are accountable. So here I am. Sugar fiend. Did you skin go really bad when you gave up dairy?

kymber said...

Sol - those all sound like great substitutes for the craving of sugar. i am so sorry that you are going through what it sounds like we went through - it's full on withdrawal and it sucks! but yes - use fresh fruit and veg when you feel the sugar craving...and hopefully you will get over this soon.

as for skin - skin got a little dry but then we started taking a small spoon of coconut oil sometime during the day and that seemed to help a lot. xox
