Borehole water, advise of filters please

Do you have private water from a well or a borehole?  Do you have a an in-line filter?  Is it ultra violet? I never thought much about it at my grandparents farm we just drank it and cooked with it.  Now looking at houses in Cornwall a lot have their own water source and I am keen to really learn as much as I can, not only on the great internet, but straight from people who actually use them everyday.

We are purchasing a berkey stainless filter, it has been on my must buy for a long time (come on, the filters do 23000 litres of water - about 11 years!  its a steal for crying out loud.  Plus Kymber and Jam are wax lyrical about it and they have used theirs since moving to {Framboise manor}).

I would greatly appreciate any advise you could give on this and I am still looking for book recommendation!

Many thank in advance for your lovely thoughts on this...

hey Sol! jambaloney recommends that you get an inline filter before running the water through the berkeys (they should be paying us for how many times we have recommended them - bahahah!). also, to save on costs - just buy the filters. you can make your own tower out of two 5 gallon food-grade buckets - see jambaloney's post here about how to do that:

and lastly - we have found that for drinking water, a rainbarrel is best. much less sediment and the rainwater is delicious. i hope this helps. any questions - just yell. we'll hear you across the pond - bahahahh!

sending love. your friend,
kymber

Hi Kymber, I had read that some people still have sediment in the water without an inline filter. It is really confusing as some people dont bother and some people use the water to wash but buy bottled water in. I am not keen on the idea of bottled water as my sister has had breast cancer twice. It would feel like tempting fate. I linked to that post on your blog about it. I am not sure how much room we will have in the new house, we thought the stainless one for the counter top would be good next to the kettle. We will look more at all of your other posts about it and see what other people come up with. I am hoping chickpea comes by as I think maybe she has a borehole and has just recently bought in Cornwall, it would be good to know her thoughts and the survey of the water source.

Hope you are well! Its windy as heck here today, really gusty and lots of rain all of a sudden. Always happens for the school holidays doesnt it. Have you seen the TV programme poldark? Its on visionTV over there apparently?

Sorry, the only advice I can give is to ask the (knowledgeable) locals. Cornish water sometimes contains not only heavy metals, but also radioactivity in certain areas, but this is what gave the Bath Spa water its healing properties. Our spring water is more likely to be contaminated by nitrate fertiliser, and the shallow stuff by liver-fluke. UV (in certain concentrations) kills bacteria I believe, but is no use for chemicals.

Wow Tom I didnt even think about the water being radioactive. is that because of the radon? Heck this needs more thinking about and research. Liver fluke? it sounds like a band!

Ok just googled that! yuck. heck and they can be in boreholes? tomorrows research has just come to light! thanks for leaving the comment!

Sol - if you use an inline filter first, and then use the berkeys - you'll be fine! xoxoxo

Hey Kymber that is what we thought we would do. inline filter and then UV. Take it out the tap and put it through the berkey filter?

We had a private well at one house we lived in here in Georgia, no idea what kind of filter we had. Our small community,100 houses, has a well and the water is just awful. It tastes like a swamp, we but drinking water.

We get Manganese in our well water Sol so I buy bottled water to drink. I don't think Manganese is harmful but it sometimes shows in the tap water.

Swamp water? Ohhh Janet that sounds really bad! I will be getting it tested for sure. if it stinks we will have to think about something else.

Hi Dave, this is really good information. we viewed one house and the very old bathroom had a brown bath. I now realise this is from manganese in the well water.... I will be looking into this further.

Thank you both for your comments this week I have had some great comments all really helpful
